A village gala scrapped through lack of support is to be resurrected by a majorette troupe.

The Gomersal Gala looked doomed when former gala boss Ann Howgate said she would not run this year's event after requests for help to organise the day went unanswered.

But members of the village's Yorkshire Mixtures majorette troupe stepped in after parents expressed dismay that the 21-year-old tradition would end.

Troupe leader Audrey Brooke said: "When some of the mums heard about the gala they said we should stage one.

"We decided to take it on this year because the troupe is taking part in fewer events.

"A few of us have written to every pub and shop in Gomersal and quite a few in Cleckheaton - and no-one has said no.

"We've had terrific support so far but we'll see how it goes before deciding whether to do it every year."

The event, which traditionally raises money for the Gomersal Old Folk's Treat which involves a night of entertainment for the over-70s, is to be held at the Red House museum in Oxford Road on Saturday, June 12.

It was first held to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977 and attracted around 2,000 visitors in its heyday.

This year's event will start at midday with a parade through the village leaving from the West End Hotel in West Street - led by the Anchor Men marching band from Elland.

The gala will include 24 stalls to raise money for various charities.

Bradford City's Bradford Belles and Wakefield Trinity's Wildcats cheerleading groups will provide entertainment and majorette troupes from across West Yorkshire will take part in a competition.

The day will have various rides and will feature a demonstration from the Spen Valley Swordsmen fencing group.
