100-or-so workers from Keighley firm Magnet stepped out to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

They were sponsored to hop, skip, jump or simply walk the Macmillan Mile near their Royd Ings site last Friday.

The firm and its staff also presented a £50,000 cheque to the national charity to mark the proceeds of fundraising over the past 12 months. Magnet has adopted Macmillan as its corporate charity for a second year kicked off the new cash campaign with its second Macmillan Mile.

The walk was led by Gary Favell, the new Magnet managing director, and employees Gillian Linyard and Karen Whiteoak.

Gillian and Karen - fresh from taking part in the New York marathon for the same charity - ran, while others followed either in fancy dress or normal clothes.

Also joining in was Martin Hann, from Magnet's Yeovil branch, who raised almost £5,000 last year by auctioning replica soccer team shirts.

Andy Airey, Magnet's marketing director, says Macmillan Cancer Relief was the most popular choice for the company's annual charity. He adds. "This event launched Magnet's fundraising activities for 1999 under the banner Together We Care, and we hope we can count on the support of friends and family to help us raise our target of another £50,000."

Macmillan is working towards the day when everyone will have equal and ready access to the best information, treatment and care for cancer. The charity funds nurses and doctors, buildings for cancer treatment and care, and grants for patients in financial difficulties.
