An appeal has been issued for someone to take on the school-crossing patrol job at a Keighley school.

The plea comes as Parkwood Rise resident Emily Smith says children are in danger because there has not been a crossing patrol at Parkwood school for months.

"I go every morning to pick up my 11-year-old granddaughter to see her across the road because it is so dangerous," says Mrs Smith. "There are lots of children running about and there is a lot of traffic. If something is not done then a child could soon be killed."

She says the problem is made worse by children from Swire Smith Middle School who have to run the gauntlet of crossing the busy Park Lane to catch buses. "I would do the job myself if I was not registered disabled," says Mrs Smith.

An council education spokesman says: "Unfortunately there isn't a crossing patrol at Parkwood First School at the moment, but we can assure Mrs Smith that we are making every effort to find one.

"We have advertised the vacancy and have asked the school to let parents know but no one has yet come forward. If anyone is interested in this important community job they should contact Tony Merifield in the crossing patrol section on 01274 751960."
