Cycle lovers are organising a chain of events in Bradford and the Aire valley to celebrate National Bike Week. Sustrans Keighley and Craven group and Bradford Cycle Action Group have organised a week long programme starting with a family fun day at the Richard Dunn Centre in Bradford and finishing with a five mile biking challenge in Peel Park, Bradford.

Wednesday June 16 is Bike to Work Day when it is hoped people will leave their cars at home and join the existing 1.1 million commuters who bike to work on a daily basis.

Celebrations kick off on Saturday June 12 at the Richard Dunn Centre and at Embsay with a family ride on the Yorkshire Dales Cycleway and a return trip on the Embsay steam railway. Both events start at 10am. Sunday June 13 sees a family canal ride and picnic setting off from Ellis Briggs at 10am followed on Tuesday June 15 by a kids fun evening in Myrtle Park, Bingley, from 6.30pm.

Wednesday June 16 is also a kids fun day at Northcliffe Gardens Shipley from 6.30pm. On Thursday June 17 women will be encouraged to get on their bikes and on Saturday June 19 there will be a cycle challenge involving speed and skills at the Richard Dunn Centre from 10am.

The week finishes with the five mile challenge in Peel Park from 10am.

*There are more than 20 million cycles in the UK and one in three adults owns one. The British Medical Association says cycling is one of the simplest and most effective ways of keeping fit.
