STEETON mum Claire Bergman is gearing up for the challenge of her life.

For she has volunteered to cycle 215 miles in the searing heat for charity.

Claire, 31, of Ash Grove, will be pedalling across Cuba later this year, hoping to raise thousands of pounds for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

And the charity is particularly dear to her heart, as her three-year-old son, Johannes, is blind.

Claire hopes a guide dog could help him achieve greater independence in later life.

The Cuba Challenge takes place in December, but it won't be winter in the Caribbean, with temperatures reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Claire, a teacher, rose to the challenge after reading about it in a Sunday newspaper.

"I thought it was a really good cause and as I work part-time I thought I would have time to do this," she told the Herald.

"I'm more of a runner, but I do have a bike and a cycle regularly. However I will really need to get fit for this."

Bicycles are the prominent form of transport in Cuba and huge numbers of them were imported from China following the collapse of the Soviet Union which led to severe fuel shortages.

The first part of the ride will take cyclists the 35 miles from Trinidad to Guajimico, crossing several river mouths and scenic coastal images.

Hilly terrain awaits with the next 60 mile trip to Santa Clara, past a dramatic bronze statue of Che Guevara.

The ride will also take cyclists thought the Yumuri Valley where turkey vultures soar on the thermal currents.

Claire remembers being told about the work of guide dogs as a child when her school was visited by a blind man.

And she is keen to help the charity which could benefit her son, who attends a special nursery school for blind children in Bradford.

"I was astounded about how much it costs to train a guide dog and they certainly help blind people live a better and more independent life," she added.

"I haven't really thought about the ride itself yet. I suppose I must be nutty, but it will certainly be an experience!

"I think the hardest thing will be keeping going for the five days because it's not just a one-off event."

To take part in the cycle ride, Claire has to raise at least £2,100 in sponsorship.
