A 37-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital after being assaulted in the street.

The man, believed to be father-of-two Trevor Capstick, was punched in the face by his attacker and fell to the pavement in Skipton.

He suffered a fractured skull in the attack which happened at about 6.45pm on Sunday in Greatwood Avenue. He was taken to Airedale General Hospital where he was put on a life support machine before being transferred to Leeds General Infirmary. His condition today was described as critical.

It is understood that Mr Capstick, who has undergone two operations, is separated from his wife and lives in Skipton.

A police spokesman said: "It is understood that the attacker had been involved in an argument with the victim earlier that day in the Horse Close pub in Greatwood Avenue, Skipton."

The attacker is described as a white male, 6ft 1in or 6ft 2in tall, aged 19 to 22, heavily built, with a short skinhead hair cut, possible stubble, and a gold earring in his left ear.

He was wearing a long sleeved top, jeans and white trainers.

It is believed the two men were involved in an argument earlier that day in the Horse Close Hotel, Greatwood Avenue.

A spokesman for the pub said staff were unaware there had been an incident inside the premises.
