A father-of-two was horrified when his young daughter took a bite of a chip - and lacerated her mouth on a shard of glass.

Twelve-year-old Charlotte Robertshaw was left cut and bleeding after the incident, which happened while the family were tucking into a takeaway meal at their Queensbury home.

And Environmental Health officers are now investigating how the glass came to be in the chicken and chips meal, which was bought from the Manzil Balti House, Torre Road, Bradford.

Mr Robertshaw, 36, said: "Charlotte had had a little nibble of the chicken and then she bit into the chip. She immediately stopped eating and pulled a piece of glass the size of a five pence piece out of her mouth.

"The glass completely lacerated the inside of her mouth behind her front teeth and we had to use two handkerchiefs to stem the flow of blood.

"I was shocked. Although her injury wasn't life-threatening, the consequences could have been a lot worse. What would have happened had Charlotte swallowed the glass?"

Mr Robertshaw said he went to complain to the restaurant manager, who gave him his money back.

"All I wanted was an apology," said Mr Robertshaw. "But I got nothing of the sort."

The owner of the Manzil Balti House, Akhtar, said: "I am aware of the incident and Mr Robertshaw has my full sympathy. I can only apologise and have offered him a full refund for the meal.

"I have been trading here for almost a year and nothing like this has ever happened before.

"I can't understand where the glass might have come from as there's no glass in the front part of the shop where the takeaway food is prepared."

A spokesman for Bradford Council's Environmental Health department said: "We are aware of the complaint and we are making investigations into it."
