Chris Silverwood and Matthew Hoggard worked hard in an attempt to make further inroads into the Derbyshire batting today after the first 15 minutes had been lost to the weather in the PPP Championship match.

Derbyshire resumed their first innings on 71 for four with Robin Weston (24) and Matthew Cassar (29) already having put on 47 together and there were few early scares for the fifth wicket pair.

Cassar added to his score with two aggressive strokes in Silverwood's first over, first cutting him to the boundary and then pulling him through mid-wicket.

Weston began more steadily, adding just four in the first 20 minutes of a cool and blustery morning. It was Hoggard who made the much needed breakthrough at 88 when Cassar, on 40, skied a catch to Matthew Wood at square leg.

Although 27 overs were lost to the weather yesterday, there was still time for 14 wickets to crash as batsmen failed came to come to terms with a lively pitch and a swinging ball.

Put in to bat, Yorkshire were shot out for 117 with only Craig White batting with any real authority in making 34 off 96 balls with five boundaries.

Phil DeFreitas captured four wickets for 37 runs to leave him needing another eight victims for 1,000 first class dismissals and Dominic Cork took three for 19, including Australian Greg Blewett and David Byas in only his second over.

Blewett looked unfortunate to be given out lbw pushing well forward and nothing seems to be going right for him in a wretched start to his season with Yorkshire.

Batting was no easier for Derbyshire as Silverwood and Hoggard reduced them to 24 for four, each bowler capturing two wickets in good opening spells with the new ball.

But the pitch appeared to have become more docile when White and Ryan Sidebottom replaced them and Weston and Cassar progressed without too much difficulty.
