A 73-year-old man was trapped when a shed collapsed, pinning his legs beneath fallen timber.

George Appleton, 73, of Woodside Farm, Skipton Road, Silsden, was attempting to repair the roof of the building, which had been damaged by recent storms.

Paramedics treated Mr Appleton on Monday evening as retained firefighters from Silsden cleared the wreckage and then carried him to the waiting ambulance.

He suffered a broken leg and is comfortable in Airedale General Hospital, Steeton.

Mr Appleton's partner, Mary Jackson, 74, said he had been out of the house a couple of hours when she decided to take him a coffee.

"It was dark and I couldn't see very well. I saw a light in a building where I thought he was with his dog and then I heard his voice. He was shouting to get an ambulance and that he was trapped by his leg," she said.

"I couldn't get to the building because I was afraid of falling on the rubble, so I went to fetch a neighbour to help. He shone the lights of a tractor on George and said I should telephone 999."

Retained firefighters from Silsden helped clear the timber as paramedics treated Mr Appleton before he was carried to the waiting ambulance.
