THE foremost entrepreneurs of fell race organisation are Dave Woodhead, whose races focus on Haworth Moor, and Alan Greenwood, who organises races in the South Pennines.
Symmetry therefore determined that on New Year's Eve Dave mounted what was recognised as the last fell race of the millennium - appropriately called the Auld Lang Syne Race, and on New Year's Day Alan mounted the new millennium's first race named the Giants Tooth from the stanbing stone near Ogden Water.
Briscoe's Brewery supplied a special millennium beer for all finishers in Dave's race and over 530 runners turned up for the six mile trog through Haworth bog which was won by Ian Holmes of Bingley Harriers in 35 mins 7 secs for the sixth year in a row.
For Skyrac Dave Young ran well in a huge field to finish 40th in 42 mins 3 secs with Graham Breeze 120th in 46.04 followed by John Forsyth 139th in 47.08, Graham Grinstead 153rd in 47.45, Ralph Warman 162nd in 48.05, Malcolm Coles 171st in 48.30 and Neil Clayton 215th in 50.35.
Excessive beer consumption may explain why only 47 starters lined up for the Giant's Tooth race won by Paul Targett of Clayton in 198 mins 21 secs. For Skyrac Howard Sawyer was first home in seventh place in 19.43 followed by Graham Breeze 9th in 20.08, Ralph Warman 19th in 21.37 and Malcolm Coles 20th in 21.40. The latter three had all raced the previous day.
Two fell races within 24 hours and a millennium celebration inbetween!
