a reality for Trojans

Boroughbridge Res 2 Burley Trojans 0

STRUGGLING Burley Trojans made the worst possible start to the New Year as defeat at high flying Boroughbridge plunged them into the bottom three for the first time this season. Victories for Pannal Sports, Kirby Malzeard and Pateley Bridge lifted them all above Trojans and the threat of relegation is now a reality.

After a promising start to the seasonTrojans are without a win since October and although no side has taken them apart, they appear to have got into a losing habit. A number of key players have not performed to their true potential and manager Gary Shankland has called for greater commitment from everyone involved to lift the club from its current predicament.

In the first-half of few chances honours were even for 35 minutes and then the home side struck twice before the break. A promising Trojans move broke down in the Boroughbridge half and the home side swept forward and a stunning right-foot volley gave Chris Hargreaves no chance.

Five minutes later the Trojans defence found the pace of the Boroughbridge forwards too hot to handle and again Hargreaves was beaten by a fierce cross shot which flew into the top corner.

Stirred into action Trojans were on top for most of the second-half and Man-of-the-Match Nick Quaife went close with their best effort. Jonathan Lofthouse also had a goal ruled out as the visitors pressed to get back into the game.

With extra players committed forward Trojans started getting caught on the break and Hargreaves pulled off two fine saves to keep the scoreline respectable.
