Paul Jewell has pledged to plunge into the transfer market to boost his Bradford City side following a deserved defeat at bottom club Sheffield Wednesday.

He revealed his intentions after the Bantams slumped to their seventh consecutive Premiership away defeat.

A dismal display saw them lose 2-0 at Hillsborough thanks to a cool strike from Niclas Alexandersson and an own goal by Andy O'Brien.

Jewell admitted that his side had been well beaten and added it "might be time to kick one or two people up the backside.

"I felt the players looked as if the Premier League had caught up with a few of them. Sheffield Wednesday were so much quicker and sharper to the ball that I might have to freshen things up a bit.

"This Premier League is very, very difficult and sometimes people can get away with stuff until the novelty wears off.

"Certain players looked mentally and physically tired. We might have to look at one or two things without making any rash judgements. But we might have to freshen the place up a little bit.

"I have certain players in mind and maybe this is the right time. It isn't easy but we will try to bring in one or two new faces.

"I am not condemning our players. I am as disappointed as they are at that performance. But I just think that if you can bring a new face in, it can freshen things up. It might just be what we need.

"There are not many teams in this division which we are better than technically so we have to have more desire than the opposition. That was lacking and that means it might be a time to kick one or two people up the backside."

The City boss insisted that he will not be making any panic buys ahead of the vital clash at home to Watford.

Jewell came in for some stern criticism from the City fans for substituting Peter Beagrie and Stuart McCall .

The chant of 'You don't know what you're doing' rang out after the skipper was withdrawn.

Jewell shrugged off the criticism. He said: "At 2-0 down, I thought we needed a goal. It was a tactical substitution, as simple as that.

"It will always get headlines if Stuart is brought off because he is such a popular player.

"But I make decisions for the good of the team and that is what I did, whether people think I am right or wrong."

City's reserves are at home to Everton tonight, kick off 7pm.
