Otley and district Lions have said a big thank-you to Wharfedale people who helped make Christmas a bumper fundraising time.

The Lions' stall and grotto at Otley Victorian Fayre raised a record amount of money for local causes. And the club was able to send a Christmas card and box of biscuits to everyone served meals-on-wheels.

Santa on his sleigh visited most parts of the town and supermarkets in the area - apart from where other charities were collecting and where parked cars made it impossible. Hasmukh Shah, Lions president, said the club apologised to those who had complained the sleigh had not visited them.

"We thank the store managers for allowing us to collect at their premises, especially at a time when so many other charities are requesting this privilege," added Mr Shah.

In addition, Lion Marilyn Hunt organised a Christmas party for more than 80 older people at the Weston Lane Sports and Social Club.

The party goers were treated to entertainment, supper, and a visit from Santa.

The Lions club is now arranging the presentation of a £3,000 fun centre, paid for out of its Starlight Appeal, to Leeds General Infirmary.

Monthly booksales start on January 28 and January 29 at The Red Lion, Kirkgate.
