Bradford Lord Mayor Councillor Harry Mason says he has been amazed at people's generosity as pledges flood in for a commemorative vigil for loved ones who have died from cancer.

The Vigil of Remembrance will take place in Bradford Cathedral between Saturday, March 18, and Monday, March 20, to raise money for the Lord Mayor's Appeal to build a £5.2 million Marie Curie Cancer Care Centre.

And just one week after launch, appeal organisers have already received £815 in pledges - including an anonymous donation of £500.

Lord Mayor's Appeal co-ordinator Brenda Lockwood said: "We've had a great response to the event so far and some of the donations have been amazing.

"You never really know what reaction you'll get from people, but so far, so good. It's been an excellent response to the initial announcement, and for those people who don't yet know about the vigil, it's certainly not too late to send in a donation."

During the three-day event, people will be able to visit the Cathedral to place daffodils on the altar and sign a book of condolence.

Carers will be on hand throughout the three days to offer comfort and support to those in distress. And the Provost of Bradford, the Very Reverend John Richardson, will lead a special service of remembrance on Sunday evening.

Lord Mayor Councillor Harry Mason said: "I'm amazed by people's generosity and I'm delighted that it seems to be going well. I'm delighted that people have decided to support this appeal." Around £30,000 has already been pledged or collected for the appeal.

Any donations should be send to: Brenda Lockwood, the Lord Mayor's Appeal Office, City Hall, BD1 1HY.
