An Ilkley councillor has praised a scheme which aims to teach schoolchildren about cancer.

The project is being launched by the charity Macmillan Cancer Relief which aims to tackle some of the fears and misconceptions surroundings the disease.

Tory Councillor Colin Powell is the region's county organiser of Macmillan Cancer Relief.

He said: "There are currently, one million people living with cancer in the UK and this figure looks set to rise. With this new project we hope to challenge and educate today's young people so that they think differently about cancer in future." Macmillan is providing two free teaching packs to all interested schools, one for pupils aged nine to 11-12, and one for those aged 12-14. The packs culminate in a Macmillan poster design competition being run in conjunction with advertising agency J Walter Thompson.
