The new Keighley bus station could be attached to the Airedale shopping centre.

Lands Securities, which runs the covered centre, has asked for the bus station concourse to be "grafted" on.

The idea was put forward during extensive consultations by West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority over the bus station's design.

The authority, which oversees local bus and train services, talked to Bradford council road engineers, planning officers and bus company Keighley and District Travel.

If a joint shopping centre and bus waiting area was provided, significant fire protection measures would be needed.

There are major multi-million-pound plans to revamp the bus station.

Negotiations have been taking place between interested parties over the design and funding of the new station.

It is intended to provide a new passenger information system, with screens at each stand giving timetable and departure details for services using the site.

The historic site is owned by Bradford council and leased to bus company Keighley and District Travel. The West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority was approached for funding.
