Guiseley 1

EMLEY 1

THESE are frustrating times for Guiseley manager Bobby Davison. Having battled this far with a squad which has shown up to eight injuries at a time, in the last few days he has seen them go out of the FA Trophy to an injury time goal and then got himself sent from the pitch by the referee as his side drew with Emley in the UniFilla Cup on Tuesday.

Davison, whose side top the UniBond League's Fair Play League thanks to his creed, believed that his banishment from the touchline was to be his only punishment.

However, after the game referee David Birkett confirmed to Guiseley secretary Bruce Speller that he would be reporting Davison.

Davison was frustrated when yet another incident escaped the notice of the assistant referee on his side of the pitch. When one of his players was struck in the face and the nearby referee's assistant failed to draw the referee's attention to it Davison kicked the ground in frustration.

Unfortunately for him in the wet conditions he splattered mud not only over his own players in the dug out but also over the assistant referee.

The over fussy officials had been determined to be the stars of the show all night and they were not going to let this go by.

More flagging than a demented Girl Guide let loose with semaphor flags for the first time brought the referee to the touchline. After a discussion they asked who the culprit was and Davison stepped forward.

He was asked to get behind the pitch barrier and this he did.

There was a disappoint9ingly low crowd for this Yorkshire derby but it diod include former Leeds United favourite Norman Hiunter.

They saw Guiseley take the lead in the 63rd minute when Benn Gallagher stepped forward to convert a penalty after Paul Bulgin had been brought down.

Young Andy Shuttleworth and lightweight midfielder David Cooke had come in for some harsh treatment from Emley.

The visitors grabbed an equaliser in the 67th minute after Guiseley's central defenders had a misunderstanding and the ball was squared to Gareth Hamlet who drilled it home.

The sides now face a re-play which is expected to take place at Emley on Monday.

GUISELEY...........1

AFTER some stirring cup battles this season the first-half of this third round FA Trophy game was something of a let down.

There was little atmosphere in the first 45 minutes but the low winter sun shining directly down the field had some effect as neither players nor spectators could see much.

Things livened up in the second-half and after Steve Hook had conceded a free-kick which led to the opening goal from Jon Gautrey Guiseley pegged it back to 1-1.

Just when it looked as if there would be a re-play the Guiseley defence was static as Rick Bainbridge stole in to snatch a winner deep into injury time.

After Gautrey had headed in David Gamble's free-kick in the 42nd minute the tempo stepped up a gear in the second-half and the two black cats that emerged from the nearby houses to frolic on the Rossett Park touchline seemed to have brought Guiseley some luck.

They equalised in the 58th minute when Simon Ireland's left wing cross was headed home by Simon Parke.

It then turned into a real battle and a draw would have been a fair result.

However, with the match day announcer giving out the time the coaches would leave Liverpool for the re-play at Guiseley the ball split Guiseley's central defenders Steve Hook and Colin Hogarth and hovered around the six yard box where Baindbrideg had stealthily stolen in.

Goalkeeper James Shutt seemed rooted to the spot as Bainbridge leapt to head the ball home just under the bar.

He leapt even higher as his delight took him over the pitch surround and into the crowd.

On Saturday Guiseley play struggling Winsford United at home and manager Davison warns of a potential banana skin.

'The law of averages says that they have to get a lucky break and win some time. We wsill have to be at our best to make sure that that is not against us. We play them twice in a week and they will be hard games for us,' he said.

Guiseley goalkeeper James Shutt, although now a teacher, has been picked for the English Universities semi-professional side for a game on January 31.

Guiseley Reserves, who had last Saturday's home game with Ashton United postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, travel to Marine on Saturday.

Injured first team squad members Des Hazel and James Nettleton are expected to have a run out while central defender Matt Daly is also hoping for a return to the side after a brief sojourn at Ossett.

Another hoping to make a return is Richard Machell after a spell at Tadcaster.
