Horsforth Golf Club
After the celebrations of New Year's Eve Horsforth Golf Club welcomed the new Millennium with a celebratory competition held over two days. On Sunday and Monday, January 2 and 3, ninety couples enjoyed good weather, good friendships and good golf with some excellent scores.
Prizes were donated by the captain, Mr Michael Kitching (Danny) and by the Competitions Committee and were engraved glass.
Choice of partners was by the players with combinations of two men, two ladies or one man and one lady.
The best score over the two days was by D Vine (5) and N Wittaker (13) with a marvellous 49 points.
Sunday's winners were - 1, J Turner and H Speight 46 points; 2, S Stewart and W Hynd 43; 3, P Shilton and A Hurley 42.
Monday's winners - 1, P Tatlor and G Jackson 46 points; 2, D Adams and M Adams 44; 3, A Ward and M Sands 42.
Saturday's competition was a Stableford with 131 entries.
Division One - 1, A Parker (11) 39 points; 2, J Hill (11) 39; 3, G Wilton (12) 38.
Division Two - 1, C Pickard (18) 41 points; 2, P Moran (14) 40; 3, S Meadows (17) 39.
Division Three - 1, M Edwards (19) 42 points; 2, P Midgley (19) 40; 3, J Alderson (11) 40.
The Ladies' first competition of 2000 was a Greensome played over 16 holes.
1, M Leddy and K Kershaw 63; 2, J Greenwood and N Beck 64; 3, B Silvester and J Beaumont 67.
Saturday's competition at Horsforth Golf Club was organised by the club professioalk Neil Bell and 64 couples competed in a four-ball, better-ball stableford. Results were: 1, M Alderson (9) and P Moran (14) 47 points; 2, P Edmundson (21) and D Coverdale (20) 46; 3, G O'Sullivan (16) and M Jagger (15) 45; 4, D Vine (5) and N Whittaker (13) 45.
The ladies' competition was a limited club stroke play over 16 holes. Results were: Division One - M Leddy (19) 65; J Greenwood (16) 73; J Howson (17) 74.
Division Two - N Beck (27) 68; B Silvester (26) 68; B Payne (22) 69.
Division Three - K Kershaw (31) 63; J Rothwell (44) 70; S Tinsley (33) 75.
Rita is the Lady
Golfer-of-Year
at Rawdon GC
THE Ladies of Rawdon Golf Club held their annual meeting and prize presentation at which Rita Scuffins was named Golfer-of-the-Year.
Rita lifted thre Speak Cup Division B, a Joan Raisin Salver, the Hamilton Trophy, the Gate Cup and the LGU Pendant to thoroughly deserve her award.
Other trophy winners were: Mrs Smithies Brooch - Pam Atherton; Peatey Plaque - Norma Donelly; Annual Medal - Pauline Coyle; Annual Medal Runner-up - Eileen Morgan; Annual Stableford - Bridget Meredith; Hunter Rosebowl - Shirley Poland; Webb Salver - Shirley Poland; Chamberlain Cup - Ann Wade; Speak Cup Division A - Ann Wade, Julie Darren, Beryl Pattinson; Joan Raisin Salver - Lynne Garbett.
Sally Bickerton was elected Lady President and Tennis Captain with Julie Dundas as Vice-President.
Julie Hamilton took over as Lady Golf Captain with June Smethills as Vice-Captain.
Other officers appointed were: secretary, Liz Leach; treasurer, Sally Smith; handicap and competitions secretary, Pauline Coyle; tennis vice-captain, Liz Padgett; ex officio - Betty Swift, Sue Smith; committee - Pam Atherton, Norma Donnelly, Kath Lawson, Bridget Meredith, Shirley Poland, Ann Wade.
The men staged their January Stableford on Sunday in frosty conditions when 69 members took part.
Results were: Division One - P Davies 39 (4); D Jones 37 (11); M Grattan 36 (14).
Division Two - S Hudson 39 (17); S V Wilson 38 (16); A Rodgers 38 (20).
Otley Golf Club
THE men from Otley Golf Club enjoyed better weather than then ladies when they held their January Stableford competitions. The ladies were bedevilled with heavy drizzle and only 24 ladies donned their waterproofs to take part whilst the men's four-ball, better-ball attracted 60 pairs on Saturday.
Leading scores: Ladies: Division One - Val Wray (15) 30; Sheila Sunderland (9) 30.
Division Two - Jenny Quinn (29) 28, Barbara Parker (21) 28.
Division Three - Hilary Palmer (31) 33; Jane Parkinson (35) 26.
Men - D Thompson (10) and B Stead (10) 61; C Palmer (16) and P Howarth (10) 62; J R Blears (3) and M Rawnsley (16) 62; J Beaumont (18) and J Fairbrother (21) 63; R Bayliss (18) and D A Taylor (16) 63; A Calder (10) and B Dulude (12) 63; D Jordon (23) and D Broadwell (15) 64; K Davison (14) and D Pickles (10) 64.
Medal
ON a very frosty morning with fairways and greens very hard, the December medal was eventually played by 60 members.
Winners were: Division One - 1, P Yewdall 77-12-65; 2, A Atkins 73-7-66; 3, D Miderley 77-9-68; 4, J Rishworth 76-7-69; 5, A Brook 83-14-69.
Division Two - 1, G Fuller 88-23-65; 2, B Rockett 83-17-66; 3, A T Green 84-17-67; 4,S Yeadon; 84-16-68 (on last nine); 5, D Roberts 96-28-68.
