Mark Sherry's bid to get a job befitting his name has hit a hiccup.
The would-be publican was delighted to land a place on a course to train people to go into the licensed trade - but now the free sessions could be called off because only Mark has enrolled.
He is appealing for others to sign up and get qualifications which could lead to jobs.
The 20-year-old chef, of Gibson Street, Bradford, said: "I've always been interested in running or owning a pub and I was really pleased when I heard about it."
Mark, who trained as a chef at Bradford College, said he liked to have a drink at his local - the Albion at Idle - but his aim was to be at the other side of the bar.
He said he was looking forward to finding about aspects like running a pub and cellar management.
The eight-week-long full-time course is being run by Laisterdyke-based J H Leisure Training and Development. It has funding from Europe and the Newlands Single Regeneration Budget partnership and is open to anyone living in the Newlands area which includes Bradford Moor, Fagley, Ravenscliffe, Greengates and Thorpe Edge and Thornbury.
Company Director Nigel Hammond said: "It is very disappointing and we wouldn't be able to go ahead with the course unless other people joined."
He said the imminent opening of the Phoenix Park leisure centre at Thornbury would provide many job opportunities in the licensed trade.
"Qualifications give you a head start when you go for a job," said Mr Hammond.
The course is approved by the National Association of Inn Keeping and will lead to qualifications including the national licensees' certificate and food hygiene and health and safety awards.
Anyone who is interested in joining the course at Lyceum House, Bradford Lane, is asked to call Mr Hammond on Bradford 664004. It is open to people who are working as well as those who are unemployed.
