A councillor fears children could be killed if access problems continue at Eastburn Primary School.

Councillor David Emmott, chairman of Steeton with Eastburn parish council, says parents and school children crossing through the neighbouring Eastburn Mills industrial estate is a recipe for disaster.

He said: "Somebody's going to get killed soon. There's no two ways about it."

He said he was besieged with telephone calls after a delivery lorry completely blocked access to the school. Parents were forced to weave their way around the lorry, further endangering the children leaving school.

The Craven ward councillor says parents campaigning for better road safety outside the school and in Main Road are furious.

Head teacher Elizabeth Pratt said the owners of neighbouring businesses are tolerant of parents parking at the site.

She said: "It's a difficult one because it's not our land, it belongs to Mill Yard. Because access to the school is difficult parents do park in Mill Yard and they are very good at being tolerant to parents parking there.

"It is a problem, but a problem created not by the lorries but by the need to get to the school. It's an industrial area and schools and industrial areas don't go together."

Bradford Council conducted a traffic survey in Main Road in December and has decided that the level of traffic does not warrant a crossing.
