A private company may be brought in to run schools in Pudsey, Guiseley and Otley after Leeds education service was damned in a highly critical report.

Government standards inspectors are expected to reveal the results of the inspection tomorrow.

The city's education service covers schools in Pudsey, Guiseley, Otley, Rawdon, Yeadon and Horsforth.

School Standards Minister Estelle Morris is also expected to address the city's head teachers.

Leeds City Council is expected to be criticised in the Ofsted report for not providing good value for money in sixth-form provision, allowing a problem with surplus primary school places to get out of control and not directing resources to areas of need.

Tim Hales, general secretary of Leeds branch of the NUT, said the report was "insulting to the people who carefully and professionally do a good job."

Mr Hales said the report made it likely that Leeds education authority could be privatised. "All the indications are that privatisation is a foregone conclusion," he said.
