FORMER Cougar favourite Grant Doorey returns to Keighley on Sunday -- with his old club firmly in his sights.
The Aussie schoolteacher was a vital part of the club's Second Division Championship winning side in 1994-95 and has gone on to a successful career as player-coach with French side Villeneuve and has led them to a fourth round challenge Cup meeting with the Cougars.
They have reached the last four French Championship finals and under Doorey enjoyed an incredible 'treble' season in 1998-99 winning the Championship, Cup and European Cup.
They will have to be on top form to beat the Keighley side, particularly if Karl Harrison's men can reproduce the form which smashed league leaders Dewsbury Rams last Friday night.
"People must not underestimate Villeneuve, they have been French champions for the last two years and that is not a Mickey Mouse league like it used to be. They have four or five French internationals in their team and we will have to prepare as well as we did for the Dewsbury game last week," Harrison said.
He has had a French coach 'spying' on the opposition since they came out of Silk Cut Challenge Cup draw.
"He is produced an individual report on each of their players and they have been very useful. The guys have been studying those throughout the week," Karl said.
After revelling in the success of Friday's victory over Dewsbury Harrison has warned his players not to get carried away.
"I was very pleased for the players. I have given them a lot of pain over the last few weeks and things finally came good.
"We cut out a lot of the schoolboy errors we had been making in the previous weeks and took another step up the ladder. Now a lot depends on how they react to that win, obviously confidence is sky high, but we have to get back to basics.
"It is no good getting carried away after one successful game, we have to continue to work hard."
Paul Harrison is a major injury doubt for the Villeneuve game after picking up a shoulder injury and Karl Smith is also unlikely to make the line-up. Matt Foster came through a run out with the A team on Wednesday and will be available for selection, giving the coach a selection headache.
"I haven't decided who will be in the final line-up, obviously I have to put a lot of faith in the players who produced such a magnificent performance against the Rams," he said.
After watching Foster return for injury once before only to pull up within minutes, he may be tempted to give him an extra week to recover from his ankle injury.
n Villeneuve were founder members of the French Rugby League when it was established in August 1934 and just a month later paid their first visit to Cougar Park.
A crowd of 5,000 saw them beaten 26-17 by a Yorkshire side which included Keighley legend Joe Sherburn who scored a try. The Keighley News of September 23, 1934, reported the game as: 'really brilliant football, most of the tries being the result of combined open play.'
Highlight of the game was a drop goal from halfway by Rousie to put the French 7-0 up after 15 minutes.
