Gateshead 3, Guiseley 1: Guiseley's UniBond Premier Division defeat at the International Stadium was marred by an injury which left veteran defender Colin Hogarth in hospital.
The game was only eight minutes old when Hogarth hit the turf while challenging for the ball. He was left clutching his shoulder, with a cut above his eye and a bloodied nose.
He was whisked away by ambulance but allowed to travel back with his team-mates after the club coach took a detour to collect him following treatment and X-rays some two hours later.
It was while Guiseley were reduced to ten men, as Hogarth lay on a stretcher at the side of the pitch, that the North East side took the lead.
The ball broke to Steve Preen and he fired home from just inside the area. In the next minute Steve Sanders came off the bench to replace Hogarth.
Gateshead doubled their advantage when Richie Alderson shot home.
Gateshead managed to scramble another attack clear just before making it 3-0 in the 77th minute through Sam Kitchen.
Skipper Des Hazel set up Guiseley's solitary reply when his free kick found Ireland whose cross from the right was only half cleared and defender Matt Daly netted a 15-yard shot.
