THE Ilkley Moor Fell Race is Ilkley Harriers' premier event of the year and Sunday's event lived up to the usual high standards.
The category 'A' fell race in the Fell Running Association calendar is very tough, with steep climbs and descents and rough terrain. Conditions were made eventougher this year by slippery conditions and strong winds - the winning time was almost two minutes down on the course record, even with some top-class runners in attendance.
The race was won by Pudsey and Bramley's Rob Hope in 38mins 31 secs from his clubmate, the Yeadon-based Paul Sheard who finished in 39.14.
Bradford Airedale's Steve Oldfield prevented a clean sweep by Pudsey and Bramley by splitting the aforementioned pair from former Ilkley man Gary Devine in fourth place.
The first team was Pudsey and Bramley while the first ladies team was Ilkley Harriers.
Only one of the 245 starters failed to finish and in the field was professional cyclist Rob Reynolds-Jones from Nessfield.
Results were:
1, Rob Hope 38.31 Pudsey & Bramley; 2, Paul Sheard 39.14 Pudsey & Bramley; 3, Steve Oldfield 39.15 first veteran over-40 Bradford Airedale; 4, Gary Devine 39.43 Pudsey & Bramley; 5, Phillip Sheard 39.53 Pudsey & Bramley; 6, Mark Kinch 40.23 Bingley Harriers; 7, Nigel Jenkins 40.45 Dartmoor Runners; 8, Stephen Neill 40.58 Pudsey & Bramley; 9, Rob Howarth 41.00 V40 Middleton Harriers; 10, Ted Mason 41.09 Wharfedale Harriers; 11, Jason Hemsley 41.11 Pudsey & Bramley; 12, Mervin Burn 41.13 Thirsk & Sowerby; 13, Colin Moses 41.35 Bingley Harriers ; 14, Stephen Bottomley 42.00 Pudsey & Bramley; 15, Danny Hope 42.01 Achille Ratti; 16, Ray Green 42.05 Saddleworth; 17, Robert Burn 42.55 V45 Thirsk & Sowerby; 18, Robert Hamilton 43.20 V40 Wharfedale Harriers; 19, I Ferguson 43.30 Bingley; 20, Mike Scott 43.33 Bingley; 21, Ken Taylor 43.34 V50 Rossendale Harriers; 22 60 Richard Crossland 43.34 V40 Bradford Airedale; 23, Jonathan Sage 44.08 Hull Springhead Harriers; 24, Chris Miller 44.11 first Under-18 Harrogate AC; 25, Jonathan Brook 44.20 Unattached; 26, Stefan Macina 44.40 Pudsey & Bramley; 27, Dominic Franklin 44.42 Saddleworth Runners; 28, Bob Waterhouse 44.43 V45 Saddleworth Runners; 29, Robin Skelth 45.06 Calder Valley; 30, Duncan Burgess 45.07 Otley AC; 31, Robin Bradbury 45.08 unattached; 32, Jack Holt 45.08 V50 Clayton Le Moors; 33, Rob Reynolds-Jones 45.23 unattached; 34, Steve Webb 45.29 Valley Striders; 35, Gary Fleet 45.37 Saddleworth; 36, Rob Thackray 45.50 unattached; 37, Harry Waterhouse 45.52 V45 Saddleworth Runners; 38, Chris Hodgson 46.05 Fellandale; 39, Paul Whelan 46.07 Bingley Harriers; 40, Tim Inglehearn 6.09 Harrogate AC; 41, Graham Pearce 46.14 Ilkley Harriers; 42, Sam Wadsworth 46.16 Wharfedale Harriers; 43, Mark Yearsley 46.18 CFR; 44 , Jonathan Midwood 46.20 unattached; 45, Mike Baldwin 46.23 V40 Ilkley Harriers; 46, Phil Hinchcliffe 46.37 Barnsley Harriers; 47, Duncan Asquith 46.43 V40 Skyrac; 48, James Ryder 46.47 unattached; 49, Nigel Kirkbright 46.49 V40 Skyrac; 50, Mark Iley 46.50 Ilkley Harriers.

Skyrac pair
shine
THE AAA National Cross-Country Championships were held at Stowe School, Buckinghamshire, and Skyrac's two entrants acquitted themselves excellently.
Elizabeth Spencer's fine season continued with 10th place in the Under-15 Girl's race, clocking 13min 56sec over the 3,600m course.
She can now look forward to the English Schools' Championships with a great deal of optimism.
Her brother Robert was also highly placed in the Under-17 men's event with 49th. Sixteen-year-old Robert ran 21min 22sec over the 6km course, a marvellous achievement for a first year runner in this age group.
Both races were out of over 300 competitors.
At Barton-on-Humber's 20th annual cross-country event on Sunday, Skyrac's senior/junior men's team came away with first place and in Chris Bryan also had the individual winner.
He was very ably supported by Jonathan Keith (sixth), Johnny Coen (15th) and Chris Miller (16th). Jonathan and Johnny were also first and third respectively in the individual junior tally.
The Under-15 boys' team achieved fourth place with Joel Riley (seventh), Steve Shacklock (11th) and Paul Slater (33rd). However, there was a disappointing turn-out commitment from the rest of the club with only four other runners across the age groups making the journey. Nevertheless, these four all ran well and S Thwaites earned a trophy for second place in the Under-11 boys. Bethany Staniland ran her best race of the season for fourth place in the Under-13 girls' category, just out of the medals, but clocking the fine time of 8min 49sec over the 2,100m course.
Stephanie Williams came seventh in the senior ladies' race and M Thwaites was 14th in the Under-13 boys' event. Considering the vast number of youngsters who turn up to be coached by Skyrac's assistants and volunteers, then surely there could have been a greater representation from the Under-11 and 13 age groups in this traditional club outing.
The best reward for coaches and athletes alike is to see all their hard work come to fruition in competition.
DESPITE wild, wintry weather on Sunday the romance of Ilkley Moor attracted a record field of 244 runners for the annual fell race in sharp contrast with the fall off in entries now being experienced by many well established events because of the current plethora of fell races.
The race, which modestly claims to be only four and a half miles in length, attracted several top names including Three Peaks Race triple-winner Ian Ferguson, and was won by Rob Hope (Pudsey and Bramley) in 38min 31sec, who was well clear of Paul Sheard (Pudsey and Bramley) and Steve Oldfield (Bradford Airedale), who were only separated by one second on 39.14.
Skyrac traditionally starts its 10-race Fell Championship with the Ilkley Moor race and 11 members turned out on Sunday with Championship aspirations in mind to finish: 47, Duncan Asquith (46.43); 49, Nigel Kirkbright (46.49); 53, Howard Sawyer (47.00); 74, Ralph Warman (49.27); 88, Steve Batley (50.37); 95, Graham Breeze (51.14); 98, Peter Rawnsley (51.34); 100, Graham Grinstead (51.44); 120, Andy Brear (54.07); 125, Neil Clayton (54.21); and 161, Max Wood (56.45).
In Championship terms Skyrac members noted Steve Batley's much improved time with interest, inferring that perhaps his long-promised return to form had arrived and he would be the man to watch this season.
Skyrac, as part of ANSA, is Wharfedale's long-established but developing athletics club and you can learn more by ringing Sue or Neil on 0113 229-0924.
Fellandale
Fellandale members were split on Sunday as to whether to enter the Ilkley Fell Race, or the Sport Direct Cross-Country at Golden Acre Park. The club had decided to support the cross -country and was able to field a men's team.
Paul Dennison was first runner home for Fellandale, and was hotly persued by Richard Falls. Other runners out included Graham and Heather Maud, Ian and Alison Wilson, Jack Escritt, Paul Glover, Carl Prendergast, Mark Saville and Alan Stenton.
New member Jenny Shepherd had a very good run and was cheered on by injured members: Dave Hodgson, Dave Britton and Paul Reynard.
Although the day was very blustery, the rain did hold-off, during the five mile run. Fellandale runners who entered the Ilkley Fell Race, had to contend with much more blustery conditions. Chris Hodgson and Dave Hainsworth both had good runs, on quite a testing course.
The previous week Dave Hickman put on a course around Horsforth where members had to run and collect information off lamp posts and hydrants around the area. Members were issued with a map with all the street names removed, and within 45 minutes had to visit as many locations as possible.
Members were seen criss-crossing around town, as far apart as the Newlays to the Railway Station. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and the event was jointly won by Julian Simmons and Martin Gebbett.
Two Fellandale members, Martin Scott and Alan Stenton, roughly measured the course for the Horsforth Boundary Run, being staged as part of Horsforth Sport n Fun, being held in Horsforth Hall Park on Sunday, June 18. It was found to be just short of ten miles, but with a circuit of the park to be included at the beginning of the race, this will bring it to exactly ten miles.
Currently the entry form/poster is being designed, the logo by member Paul Reynard, and it is hoped to have them printed and circulated from the third week of March.
On Friday, March 3, Fellandale holds its annual dinner at La Copella on Horsforth Town Street - the venue for the past two years, each time under different ownership!
The guest speaker this year will be Allan Greenwood, who promotes races in the Kirklees and Calderdale areas. He will also be handing out the cups and trophies to members for their club performance - this also includes the toilet seat, for the member who could do better!
For more information on Fellandale and its activities please contact Mark Saville, Chairman, on 0113 258 4680.
Wharfedale Harriers
An eventful weekend saw the Wharfedale Harriers with split loyalties on Sunday. Those hardy souls focussed on the Kendal Winter League - where every one of the 15 races counts for points - were rewarded with gales and torrential rain at the Cautley Fell Race near Sedbergh on a course that was sluicing with water. That the winning time of 37.18 was some ten minutes slower than the record gives a clear indication of the ferocity of the conditions. Steve Hounslow did extremely well to finish 6th in 41.36, helped (it is rumoured) by a spectacularly fast descent where contact with the ground was mostly made with his backside rather than his feet. Following with more grace, but considerably less speed, were Damien Scholes 12th in 51.50 and Kevin Rogan 13th in 52.52. In the ladies race, over a shorter course, Kate Rogan seemed to revel in the conditions and came home a clear winner in 28.50. In the U17 boys, over the same course as the ladies, the now familiar ranking was observed with Martin Hounslow finishing 2nd in 28.42, Sam Hounslow 3rd, 29.07 and Ross Whittaker 5th, 31.39.
Meanwhile, not so very far away and in weather considerably more conducive to racing, seven members raced on home soil in the Ilkley Moor Fell Race.
Always well organised and attracting a good quality field, this race sees the same people returning year after year, old rivalries being renewed and new ones beginning. Ted Mason had a cracking run to finish 10th in 41.09, just nipping home ahead of ex-Ilkley Harrier Jason Hemsley. Next home for Wharfedale was Bob Hamilton 18th in 43.20, who just got in ahead of another ex-Ilkley man and former club rival, Jonathan Sage. Bob picked up the trophy
for first local, an award he last won back in 1992. Third man home was Sam Wadsworth in what was certainly the gutsiest run of the day. Sam was well up in the race, only just behind Ted, when a slip at the bridge over Hangingstone Beck gave him a badly gashed knee. After resting for a while, Sam carried on, sweeping past many good runners to eventually finish a remarkable 42nd in 46.16. Following him home were Des O'Regan 51st in 46.52, David Hird 60th in 47.57, and new members Liz and Ashley Selman competing in their very first fell race, running around together in 70.11 despite Liz also suffering a bad fall on the descent to Hangingstone Beck.
Prospective members should not be put off by the large number of
misadventures! The great thing about fell running is that every race spawns a story and very rarely is there any serious damage done to life or limb.
We'll all be out training and racing again this coming weekend.
Wharfedale Harriers is a family oriented club aiming to promote fell and cross-country running across all ages and abilities. Training takes place Monday to Thursday evenings from Silsden, Skipton and Ilkley. For more details please contact David Hird on 01535 653826 or visit the website at www.wharfedaleharriers.org.uk.
Otley AC
OTLEY AC runners competed in the National Cross-Country Championships on Saturday and in the Ilkley Moor Fell Race on Sunday. In the Nationals at Stowe School in Buckinghamshire over 1700 competitors were happy with the course design which produced no bottlenecks or potential danger areas.
In such extensive grounds the senior men's race needed only two laps and the parkland provided a good running surface and Otley's Ian Fisher managed a better start than in his previous big cross-country event when representing Yorkshire in the Inter-Counties. He settled straight away into a lower 20s position and Neil Eccles and Andrew Robertshaw also made good starts.
Those further back from the starting line however have to be content with being surrounded by runners who may have either gone off too fast and can't maintain the pace or want to be running fast. The course designer deserved credit for the ample width of the course which allowed overtaking without too much trouble.
Eccles ran a gutsy race fading slightly towards the end and Robertshaw picked runners off in the middle part of the race but faded in the last mile or so. Julian Mawson, in his first National, ran sensibly and Dale Foster, having been ill at the start of the week, started steadily and made a big effort towards the end.
Tom Hannah, slowly coming back to fitness after injury, was pleased with his position as the club were pleased to finish as a team. Full results are not available but it is known that Ian Fisher was 23rd in 42.26; Neil Eccles 271st in 47.17, Andrew Robertshaw did 48.50, Julian Mawson 49.31, Dale Foster 50.13 and Tom Hannah 57.57.
In the Ilkley Moor Fell Race the surface demanded respect if you were to remain upright, The descents demand specialist fell running footwear and lots of confidence. Duncan Burgess was first Otley runner home in 45.097 with Ray Hawksby doing 47.43, new member Andrew Willis 50.09,m Colin Best 53.51, new member Darren Edmondson 56.03 and David Cattenach 66.19.
The Otley Motors Ten Mile Road Race entry forms for the run on Wednesday, May 24, are now available in local sports shops and leisure centres. They are also available on club nights at Otley RUFC on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.,15 pm. Why not collect a form and train with the club? New members are always welcome.
