Aireborough 22 ROTHERHAM CLIFTON 5
AIREBOROUGH extended their unbeaten home league record with a much improved performance at Nunroyd Park. In a bright opening they camped in the opposition half and inevitably scored when flanker Paul Nightingale picked up at a loose scrum making a weaving run to the line for centre Paul Mackie to convert.
They continued to dominate play with lock Richard Fall towering abive the opposition in the lines and stand-in scrum-half Mike Neild impressing with his fast hands and injection of pace. With good quality possession Aireborough's midfield showed much more penetration than in previous games and this was rewarded when a switch move between James Kinghorn and Paul Mackie resulted in the latter making a long run to the line.
Aireborough started the second-half with the best try of the game when, gaining a heel against the head in a scrum No 8 Martin Hemsley picked up and, after committing the defence, provided a perfectly timed pass to Mike Neild who found top gear to score in the corner. Their lead was always safe with their forward domination where prop Granville Sellars made an important contribution and their final try resulted from a break by Martin Hemsley which allowed winger Lee Scatchard to touch down.
Conceding a try late in the game did not detract from Aireborough's superiority over a team higher in the league.
The Dragons' game on the Whitelands pitch at Rawdon was cancelled when their opposition Ilkley A surprisingly could not raise a side and the prospect of a highly competitive derby game was missed.
l On Saturday Aireborough play club games against Otley's junior sides with the first team at home to Otley Tongans and the Dragons visiting Otley Viscounts. Both games will kick-off at 3 pm.
