TROJANS RES 3
BOSTON SP RES 4
(after extra-time)
BURLEY Trojans Reserves saw their hopes of glory dashed by a goal two minutes from the end of extra-time in the Spa Cup semi-final on Saturday.
Trojans will feel unlucky to lose a tie that they led three times, particularly bearing in mind the circumstances surrounding the match.
Trojans first team had been due to play at Boston Spartans but, having travelled, the game was called off 30 minutes before kick- off. Cynically, Boston then included a number of first teamers in their reserve side, having ensured that Trojans could not do likewise with their players stranded 20 miles away.
Trojans started brightly and made all the early running. The difficult surface didn't help and was to blame for Gareth Goodison blazing over when well placed. The young striker did not have to wait long to make amends, firing home from close range when set up by his brother James.
The home side didn't make their territorial advantage pay and were pegged back just before half time when a 20 yard drive flew into the top corner following a Boston corner.
Midway through the second period Gareth Goodison added his second, keeping his head to clip a shot over the vistors 'keeper when played through by the tireless Matt Hawnt. With only five minutes of normal time remaining Trojans were rocked by a controversial equaliser.
A Boston corner was swung into the area and as the ball bobbled around it was clearly punched into the net by the visitors centre-forward. The protests fell on deaf ears and the goal was allowed to stand.
With extra-time only three minutes old Trojans were ahead again. Chris Worts, on his return to the side after a lengthy absence, linked up with Rob Wheeler and, as the player manager surged into the area, he was felled by a Boston defender. Substitute Jamie Davey, only on the field for a matter of seconds, coolly slotted the spot kick into the bottom corner with his first touch of the game.
Centre-half Matt Steer went close to extending the lead, forcing the 'keeper to tip his header over from Wheeler's corner.
The visitors never gave up and got back on level terms just before the end of the first period of extra-time, their substitute looping a header over 'keeper Richard Lord.
It was rough justice on Lord who had a fine match showing excellent handling skills to keep the visitors at bay .
Despite intense pressure from Boston, the home side were holding firm with Man-of-the- Match Tim Fendyke in inspired form alongside Steer at the heart of the defence.
Just as the tie appeared to be heading for the drama of a penalty shoot out, the visitors popped up to send a shot through a crowd of players and into the bottom corner.
There was no time for Trojans to reply and they were left to reflect on what might have been.
l The Reserves return to league action on Saturday with a tough looking match at home to third placed Bass Social. Kick-off 2.30pm.
l Trojans first team travel to Beckwithshaw, last weeks conquerers of Pool, kick-off 2.30pm.
