A 12-year-old Keighley girl who was devastated to learn her brother was suffering from testicular cancer has organised a charity concert in his honour.

Pianist Lucy McLellan will be joined by other musicians for the event which will raise awareness of the disease and money for research.

Her 19-year-old brother Richard, a former Bradford Grammar School pupil, was diagnosed with cancer last summer. He received intensive chemotherapy treatment and is now back at university and regaining his strength.

Lucy said: "My family wanted to do something to help other young men with this disease and organising a concert seemed the right thing to do."

The original idea was for Lucy and her friends to perform at their school, Leeds Girls High. But her piano tutor in Manchester, Simon Bottomley, decided to make it a larger event.

Now pianists studying at Cheethams School of Music in Manchester, including a piano finalist from this year's BBC Young Musician of the Year, will be giving up their time to perform. They will be joined by choral singers from Bradford Grammar, the venue for the event.

The school has also started health education lessons and is distributing leaflets to boys on how to check for testicular cancer.

Lucy's mum, Sue McLellan, said: "It has been a very difficult time for us and we wanted to do something positive. My son was 19 when he was diagnosed and it was devastating.

"We hope the money we raise will help with finding better treatments because the effects of chemotherapy are dreadful. It is also important that young men know the dangers."

Mrs McLellan praised Bradford Grammar, adding: "They have been absolutely amazing. They have really put themselves out."

Linda Rothery, the school's co-ordinator of health education, said: "I think those issues are neglected and it's very important for boys to know the signs as early as possible."

Headteacher Stephen Davidson added: "Because there is a particular interest in one of our young men having suffered from this illness, we felt emotionally bound to help." All proceeds from the concert will go to Imperial Cancer Research Fund's testicular cancer research programme at St James's Hospital, Leeds.

Bradford Grammar School will be hosting the event in its Price Hall on Saturday March 25, 7pm.
