Images and artefacts of Bradford's bygone fire service are needed to bring a touch of tradition to the brigade's newest station.

West Yorkshire Fire Authority is planning to relocate Bradford's main station to a purpose-built base at Maud Street, off Leeds Road.

And firefighters are appealing for help from members of the public to create a mini-museum at the new site.

The display could include pictures of major building fires in the city, pre-war fire safety advice material and old uniforms.

Leading firefighter, Peter Lau, said staff were keen to trace the history of the fire service in the city, but need some help from local people.

"Any pictures, documents or artefacts such as old fire helmets and equipment would be greatly appreciated," he said.

"Someone's granddad may have been a firefighter in Bradford and they may have an old helmet or tunic gathering dust in the attic.

"It would be great if we could bring all these items together and put them on show for the people of Bradford to enjoy."

The Bradford base is gearing up for future community fire station status and sees the museum appeal as a way of involving local people.

Leading firefighter Lau explained: "When we move to Maud street in the next couple of years it will be a purpose-built, modern looking building.

"The donated memorabilia will ensure that the link between old and new - and the community we serve - remains.

"We want people to become involved in their local service by visiting the station, taking advantage of meeting facilities and accepting fire safety talks."

Fire stations across the county are now being earmarked for community status following successful pilot projects in Huddersfield and Batley.
