Cycling: National Road Race champion John Tanner (Pro Vision) made a successful start to the new road-racing season, winning the 66-mile Dave Shakespeare Memorial Road Race near Rotherham.
Tanner, from Doncaster, out-sprinted Hamish Haynes and Will Wright.
Otley rider Ben Batton (Knaresborough CRT) scored his third win of the season in the 15-mile circuit of Dallow Moor. Batton clocked 40.42 to win from Newcastle rider Jason Robson (GS Metro) in 42.45 and Richard Harrison (Bradford Wheelers-Ellis Briggs RT) in 43.10.
Before finishing fourth in the Shakespeare Memorial Race, Kevin Dawson (Peter Read Racing) won the Matlock CC Hilly 25 in 1.2.40 ahead of Sheffield traffic warden John Charlesworth (South Yorkshire Police CC) who was well beaten into second place in 1-5-4.
There was a disappointing field of only 35 riders for the Featherstone Road Club 25 on the Wakefield-Doncaster Road. The race needed 20 marshals to ensure that all the riders stayed on course and within an hour of the finish they were looking for something new for next year.
Sunday's event was won by Joel Wainman (Peter Read Racing) in 58.32 from his team-mate Rob Newman in 59.18 and Steve Brown (East Bradford CC) in 1.2.17. Brown held third place throughout the race.
