Artist Alan Hydes will create a special painting of Bradford for a new television series.

And Telegraph & Argus readers are being invited to suggest their favourite scene to feature in the programme.

Mr Hydes will paint scenes of six towns and cities for the Past and Present series for Yorkshire Television.

The idea is for him to choose an old painting each week from a local art gallery and revisit the location to paint it afresh in modern times.

That is how he will be tackling Harrogate, Wakefield, Grimsby, Bridlington and Sheffield, which are also included in the series, due to be screened in June.

But Mr Hydes, who lives in Apperley Bridge, wants to make the Bradford painting extra special because it is his home city.

"What we normally do is find a picture in an art gallery and stand in exactly the same spot," he said.

"What I'd really like to do for Bradford is ask people to come up with their ideas of what their favourite view is and send in a photograph. We tend to find somewhere that is typical of the town or city we are doing so hopefully it should say something about Bradford.

"It wants to be Bradford town proper not somewhere else in the district like Ilkley but it could be the outskirts. Maybe the view we choose is going to have a mosque in it or something like that."

Mr Hydes has already visited Cartwright Hall in Lister Park, Bradford, to look at old paintings of the city.

Cartwright Hall will soon have an Open Art exhibition on display, which will include the work of Joan Poor, pictured above. T&A readers have four weeks to send in their photographs and ideas of which view Alan should paint. He will then visit the T&A offices to sift through the suggestions.

The person who has come up with the idea which is selected will be invited to take part in the filming of the Bradford programme.

If you have a favourite view of Bradford, send in the details and a photograph to Simon Ashberry, Telegraph & Argus, Hall Ings, Bradford BD1 1JR.

Your suggestion must reach us by April 5 and filming for the series will begin at the end of next month. Photographs cannot be returned unless you enclose a stamped addressed envelope. If a view is chosen which has been suggested by more than one person, their names will be drawn from a hat to decide who will be invited to take part in the programme.
