MAJOR plans for two hotels in Yeadon could lead to one of Wharfedale's most notorious accident blackspots being made safer.

Councillor Phil Coyne (Lab, Otley & Wharfedale) called on planning officers to negotiate for funds from developers of a proposed hotel and conference centre near Leeds Bradford Airport to contribute to highways measures in the area, but especially for Carlton Crossroads.

"Many people use this crossroads as an alternative road into Leeds and there have been a lot of accidents," Coun Coyne said at the Development Control Panel West meeting at Leeds Civic Hall on Tuesday.

Councillors heard that plans for a 208 bedroom hotel with function rooms and leisure club and a 126 bedroom budget hotel with car parking off White House Lane, Yeadon were progressing slowly.

They said there was still a number of outstanding issues to be resolved, including traffic impact, unsatisfactory design and landscaping before the plans, submitted in June last year, could be considere.

Objectors include 22 residents, Friends of the Earth and MP Harold Best.
