BRAMHOPE'S new war
memorial has come a long way to take its place in the village -
after taking a passage from
India.
The granite for the memorial, which will be engraved with the names of those who fell in combat, was imported from
India.
It has now arrived to take centre stage in the soon-to-be landscaped garden of remembrance in the village.
The memorial is being funded by the Bramhope branch of the Royal British Legion - which discovered that some names were missing from the original
monument.
Brian Norfolk, treasurer of the group, said: "We had to get the actual memorial stone from India to get a piece of granite the size that we wanted. That is now ready.
"The idea was that it would be the village Millennium project, or so it set off as. It has developed a bit since then."
The Royal British Legion, which has funded the memorial through donations, is awaiting planning permission for the materials they wish to use in the garden of remembrance, before going ahead with the revamp.
David Marshall, the club secretary said: "We just need to get everything together. It is not going to take a great time to finish the job."
Mr Marshall, who said the Royal British Legion plan to
celebrate the completion of the plan by inviting other branches to a service and march, hopes the finishing touches will be finished by late spring.
