ALAN Titchmarsh returns to Ilkley on Saturday (March 11) to quite literally inspect his roots.

The star of BBC television's Ground Force, Alan is coming home to fulfil two engagements.

On Saturday evening, the Kings Hall will stage An Evening with Alan Titchmarsh - presented by the Ilkley Grammar School Parent Teacher Association.

There will also be an opportunity to buy a book signed by the man himself.

However, the other reason for Alan's visit is to say hello to his friends at Ilkley Playhouse.

Alan, a former Player himself and now an honoray patron, re-opened the newly refurbished Playhouse in March last year.

Now he is returning to check on the progress made. Jennie Aron of the Ilkley Players explained.

"At the ceremony last year, Barry Strong (honorary life member) joked to Alan that the two raised beds on Weston Road might make an interesting subject for Alan's Ground Force.

"Without further ado, Alan generously commissioned a leading Norfolk

specialist in bamboos and grasses to provide the planting for the beds."

"They will be completed just in time for Alan's next visit to Ilkley," she said.

Ilkley's favourite green-fingered son will be at the Playhouse at about

4pm. An Evening with Alan Titchmarsh at the Kings Hall starts at 7.30pm.
