A PROPOSED cycleway, which would run through North Craven, has been suggested as part of the National Cycle Network.

The Pennine Cycleway is being promoted by Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity, and it would run from Derby to Berwick-upon-Tweed, skirting the Yorkshire Dales National Park between Thornton-in-Craven and Ingleton.

Now residents of Craven are being urged to give their views on the proposed cycleway.

North Yorkshire County Council wants to hear what local people think about the idea and is seeking views on the route through this area.

A public meeting was held at Settle Town Hall on Tuesday attended by representatives from the county council and Sustrans.

Mike Moore, the county council's director of environmental services, said: "Cycling is a key aspect of our local transport plan, and as part of our commitment to provide safer routes for cyclists we have been working closely with the district councils and the cycling charity, Sustrans.

"We urge local residents to give us their views on this latest proposal."

Craven District Council plus town and parish councils have already been approached for their views, as well as other representative groups.

Settle Town Council was concerned that there should be adequate warning signs to other motorists along the route, to make it as safe as possible for cyclists.

Sustrans has produced leaflets for the general public giving details of the route and these are available from the county council offices on Carleton Road, Skipton, or by telephoning 01756 793344.

Anyone who wishes to express their views on the proposed Pennine Cycleway should address them in writing to the Environmental Services Directorate, County Hall, Northallerton, DL7 8AD before Tuesday March 21.
