A Wharfedale councillor has renewed his campaign to get a dangerous road lit before there is a tragedy.

Councillor Graham Kirkland (Lib Dem, Otley and Wharfedale) said the unlit stretch of the A658 between Yeadon Airport Depot and the Dyneley Arms at Pool-in-Wharfedale desperately needed lighting.

"There is a national 60mph limit which is often exceeded and there are over 1,000 vehicles per hour. If you add to the fact that this is the only unlit A class road in this area and accidents are common, you have a recipe for disaster," he said.

"I have been concerned for some time about the dangers of this road, particularly given the chequered history of certain stretches of it. Something must be done."

Coun Kirkland said that there were three or four areas on the road that urgently needed lighting, and added that the notorious Carlton Crossroads was particularly dangerous with frequent accidents.

Coun Kirkland has written to the chief street lighting engineer.

A spokesman for Leeds City Council said: "We are going to be looking at a scheme to improve the Carlton crossroads which may include street lighting for this stretch of road."
