Comedian Bernard Manning is to return to Oakworth despite the controversy surrounding his last appearance.

Councillors, racial equality officers and villagers blasted Manning's decision to perform at the Snooty Fox three years ago.

The show sold out, but objectors called for a mass demonstration and held discussions with police over what action could be taken. Snooty Fox spokesman John Tarves yesterday announced Manning would be back on April 28.

Bradford council leisure chief Cllr Barry Thorne immediately blasted the Colne Road pub for booking Manning. He says: "Anyone who's thinking of going should look at their consciences. Probably the best way to deal with Manning is not to go."

Manning says his Rolls Royce is a testament to his success, and says he plays to full houses every night of the week.

He adds: "It was a smashing audience at the Snooty Fox last time. It will take more than a few protestors with banners to stop me getting to Oakworth."

Janet Armstrong, secretary of Oakworth Village Society, says she cannot reveal her opinion about Manning's forthcoming visit because the society represents the whole village.

But she admits that some people in Oakworth will agree to Manning being allowed to perform at the Snooty Fox.

She adds: "On a matter like this we have to sit on the fence because we don't want to offend people for which it might be alright."
