Police are awaiting the results of forensic tests after an inflammable liquid was poured though the letterbox of a Keighley home and set alight.

The fire service was called to the Raven Street house at around 7.15pm on Monday by a neighbour who had heard the sound of a smoke detector.

Station Officer Nigel Craven, of Keighley fire service, says when the two pumps arrived there was a small fire in the lobby of the house which was quickly brought under control.

The occupant of the sheltered house was out at the time of the incident and there were no injuries, he said.

Due to the suspicious nature of the incident the police were called and are still investigating the fire.

Sergeant Dave Bartley, of Keighley police, confirms an unknown liquid was poured through the letterbox and set alight.

He says a message was also attached to the door. He adds it was only luck which prevented the fire from taking hold.

He says: "We are aware of some known problems within that neighbourhood with which the occupier has unfortunately been involved.

"This would appear to be another catalyst we are going to have to deal with.

"Hopefully in the near future we will be looking at some arrests."

DC Hugh Brady, who is in charge of the investigation, says the occupant of the house has been the victim of harassment by local youths.

He says: "There was a note attached to the door.

"It was a threatening note and it has been sent off for analysis."

He confirms no arrests have been made but says a number of names have been suggested to Police.

"There have been some names forwarded and if it comes back forensically that they are involved they will be arrested. "We have got people in mind" he says.

Helen Lupton, area director of North British Housing Association, which owns the Raven Street house, says: "We are aware of the situation.

"We take the health and safety of our tenants very seriously and we will not tolerate harassment or anti-social behaviour.

"North British Housing Association will take direct action where possible or we will work closely with the police and other agencies to do the same," she says.
