Gremlins
Gremlins U-13s...4 Middlesbrough...1
This was a famous victory for Guiseley Gremlins against quality Premiership standard opposition and a good indication of the progress that has been made by Mick Chambers' Under-13's squad.
The game started in frantic fashion and before things settled down Lewis Blakey had a great shot saved after being put through by Andy Simmons, Chris Napoli fired inches wide and a Chris Davey shot was well gathered by the Boro 'keeper. Meanwhile Middlesbrough were matching Guiseley attack for attack and their No.9 had a fine shot saved by Guiseley 'keeper Jake Wray. However, Wray had no chance with the same striker's next attempt which went in off the far post to give Middlesbrough the lead.
Guiseley immediately set themselves on course to get on terms. Davey shot narrowly wide and with increasing pressure the Boro 'keeper was forced into another desperate save but Kris Hudson gathered up the rebound to grab the equaliser. Will Stubbs then put Guiseley ahead, picking up the ball from a rebounded save and rounding the 'keeper to score. The Gremlins pushed on. Davey had another shot saved and at the other end Wray made another fine save. Central midfield became a fascinating tactical battle where Chris Napoli in particular shone with a tenacious display in his pivotal role in the middle of the park, while in defence Ben Webster made vital tackles at right-back.
As Guiseley gradually gained the upper hand Joe Parry sought to put them 3-1 up as he sped down the left wing, only to see his final shot sail agonisingly over the bar. The subsequent Middlesbrough counter attack was ended by a perfectly timed tackle from James Campbell. After Napoli had a good attempt cleared away, Hudson scored the vital third goal for Guiseley. Picking the ball up from the centre circle, he bore down on the goal with the Boro defence backing off, allowing him time to line up his powerful shot to perfection.
Stubbs then clinched a great win for Guiseley with his second goal. Winger Parry again raced down the left and crossed perfectly for Stubbs to head in at the near post. In the closing moments Middlesbrough tried to retrieve something from the game, hitting the bar with a looping shot and their centre-forward was put through again but shot wide.
