Fundraising has been launched to help a Keighley toddler suffering from a rare form of lymphoma cancer.

Little Niomi Gillin, pictured, who is 21 months old, this week began an intensive course of chemotherapy treatment which could last for more than a year.

And as the tot underwent her first dose of treatment at St James' Hospital, in Leeds, efforts started to raise money for her and for the Candlelighters children's cancer charity.

Mum Sara Gillin, 22, first realised there could be a problem with her daughter about five weeks ago when she noticed a lump on Niomi's head.

She says: "I wasn't over concerned because I thought Niomi had probably just bumped her head as children her age do, but I decided I had better get it checked out.

"I took her along to the health visitor, who suggested I make an appointment with my GP, which I did. Niomi then had X-rays and tests at Airedale Hospital which showed there was something amiss in her skull.

At that stage we did not know what the problem was."

Niomi was taken to St James' Hospital where further tests were carried out. A biopsy revealed she had cancer, and after exploratory surgery on her skull, it was confirmed she was suffering from the rare anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

"When I found out it was cancer the news at first just didn't hit home," says Sara.

"She is such a bubbly little girl. Apart from the lump on her head there were no signs she was unwell. She had temper tantrums occasionally, but no more than any other child.

"When I think now what Niomi is going to go through with the chemotherapy and its side effects - such as hair loss - I am devastated, but without the treatment she will die.

"The lymphoma is present in various parts of her body, but I am told that young children often respond well to the chemotherapy. I have got to be hopeful."

During the programme of chemotherapy, Niomi will also receive regular tests on her kidneys and heart, which can be affected by the treatment.

A fundraising appeal is being organised by Sara's cousin, Mrs Rachel Shellabear.

Already planned is a sponsored head shave at Hairavanti, in Keighley, by Rachel's nine-year-old son Jack, a pupil at Laycock School. The date is still to be confirmed.

Other proposed events include a fun dog show.

Mother-of-three Rachel, from Highfield, is appealing to the public and the business community to support the campaign, either with donations or by staging their own events.

She says: "When we were told about Niomi's condition we were absolutely gutted. She is such a lovely little girl.

"We want to raise as much as we can so that we can help Niomi and give her an extra special birthday this summer, and support the Candlelighters.

"We have several activities in the planning stage, but we would dearly love to hear from other people and organisations who would be prepared to assist in some way."

Anyone wishing to support the appeal is asked to phone 07944 001727.

The Keighley News will publicise fundraising events.
