Burley-in-Wharfedale could boost its battle against criminals by increasing the number of Neighbourhood Watch groups.
About half the village is covered at present, but police and the community council believe that could be increased.
Mike Harris, community council secretary, told people at Burley Neighbourhood Forum: "You are never going to achieve 100 per cent coverage but we believe it is realistic to increase the figure to nearer 70 per cent."
Inspector Paul Clynch believes it is an effective method of deterring criminals and urged the community to embrace it.
Mr Harris said it was important not to be complacent about crime. "We have had a number of cars stolen from the railway station recently, so I think it is important to have as many areas covered as possible."
