A Haworth pub expects to do well with a "hole" new kind of attraction.

Workmen discovered a historic well in the former car park of the Old Sun Inn while building an extension. The 26-foot-deep hole will now form a wishing well centrepiece for the beer garden of the West Lane pub.

Owners David and Kathryn Wilmot have been told the well has been covered over for more than 50 years and could date back to the early 1800s.

"We've been down and cleaned it out," says Mr Wilmot. "The water was spotless. It was better than what sometimes comes out of the tap."

The well was discovered after the couple decided to extend the pub to provide a new dining room. A lorry delivering building supplies is believed to have uncovered the well.

The building occupied by the pub was originally three cottages, but Mr Wilmot believes the well supplied more than those homes. He is approaching local historians to discover how old the well really is.
