VANDALISM is rife in our society but the morons responsible for the repeated attacks at Green Lane Cricket Club are particularly loathsome creatures.
A pensioner has suffered a painful injury, indirectly as a result of a few brain-dead people who take pleasure in destroying the hard work of others.
What makes this catalogue of destruction even more heart-breaking, is the work put in by those connected with the club.
How easy it would have been for club officials to sit back, complain about the damage and 'hope' something would be done to resolve the situation.
Hundreds of pounds and a great deal of time has been devoted to repairing the damage caused by vandals. The club president, a pensioner, has suffered a serious knee injury as an indirect result of the vandalism. Norman Holroyd is a shining example of how not to be defeated by the idiotic actions of vandals - whatever the personal cost.
He is now hobbling on crutches having suffered a knee injury caused by the falling sight screen he was trying to repair.
Not surprisingly, club officials have reached their wits end. How sad that all-night 'stake outs' have even been considered, however briefly, as a plan to thwart those responsible.
Confronting the vandals head-on might relieve a lot of frustration but would more likely result in club supporters being prosecuted, not the idiots they were trying to stop.
Drunkenness is probably a strong factor in this sorry story and shows the pathetic levels to which people will stoop..
Saddest of all is the actual effort the vandals are putting in. Shoving wicket covers into a pond is a real team effort.!
Hopefully, some publicity may spark greater awareness of the problem and perhaps shame those responsible into growing up.
