Help is at hand for Japanese tourists with a taste for real ale.

A guide to our traditional tipple has been produced for Eastern visitors to Bronteland.

The leaflet - compiled by the Keighley and Craven branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) - provides information in Japanese on seven Haworth hostelries.

It also includes a description of real ale and its production, and even contains handy hints on how to ask for a pint!

Copies of the leaflet have been distributed to Haworth's Tourist Information Centre and to the youth hostel.

CAMRA branch chairman Lynda Smith says: "We were chatting over a pint one evening when the idea for this guide came to us.

"Haworth has some excellent pubs and the village attracts thousands of visitors from Japan every year. We thought a simple real ale guide would be helpful.

"The Japanese do not have anything quite like real ale back home and they may well want to sample our very traditional drink while visiting the area. Hopefully this leaflet will be of assistance to them."

Following a survey of Haworth pubs by CAMRA members the information for the guide was sent to a colleague Hisako Koike - who lives and works in Munich - for translation.

The leaflet is welcomed by local hostelries and tourism bosses.

Emma Bohannon, manager at the Black Bull, in Main Street, says: "We get quite a few Japanese customers and they usually try the real ale and Guinness. It seems to go down reasonably well. I think a guide book is a good idea"

Her comments are echoed by Janet Clarke, at the Old White Lion, who adds: "We have a lot of visitors from Japan - particularly from May onwards - and many do sample our traditional beers."

Several leaflets have already been picked up from Haworth Tourist Information Centre.

Centre manager Tricia Tillotson told us: "Japan is our biggest overseas market and I think anything which helps people enjoy their visit to Haworth has got to be applauded."
