Fortune has smiled on a competition queen who has hit the jackpot on a popular TV quiz show.

Hazel Abbott, 35, from Halifax Road, Cullingworth, was left in a spin when she won the £2,000 top prize on the game show Wheel of Fortune.

The mother of two correctly guessed the name of former England rugby star Jeremy Guscott to scoop the top prize.

And it was a major surprise for Hazel, the manageress at Cullingworth Fish Shop, who didn't even expect to take part in the show.

Hazel says: "I sent in an entry form from the magazine Competitors World about a year and a half ago and had forgotten all about it.

"The programme makers rang me out of the blue and said I was short-listed - I couldn't believe it."

With mum Rita Butterfield by her side for support, Hazel travelled north of the border to Scottish Television's Glasgow studio, where the show is recorded.

Cheering her on from home were husband Nick and daughters Natalie, nine, and Sophie, six, who are both pupils at Cullingworth Primary School.

After beating the two other contestants in the first round, Hazel was faced with the daunting challenge of guessing the name of the famous sporting celebrity.

Hazel adds: "I was quite pleased about that because I don't really know much about sport.

"We had a brilliant weekend and both John Leslie (the show's host) and Jenny Powell were really lovely. We have been getting the house finished this year so the prize money is going towards a family holiday next year."

Hazel is no stranger to television game shows after appearing on BBC's Can't Cook, Wont Cook with dad Peter.

She has also won numerous other competition prizes including an all expenses paid VIP trip to the Bafta Awards. Hazel's appearance on Wheel of Fortune will be screened on ITV at 1.35pm on April 12.
