Bradford firms are being urged to do more to cut waste at work.

They are among businesses in West Yorkshire estimated to waste electricity worth nearly £6 million a year, according to Government research.

The Are You Doing Your Bit? Campaign is urging firms to save energy - and money - through small changes as part of an attempt to tackle the problem of climate change.

The research by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions shows that workers in the region could make an extra 61 million cups of tea every week with the £5.9m worth of electricity currently wasted.

A campaign spokesman said: "This wasted energy contributes to damaging the environment. Unchecked climate change will mean more frequent severe weather conditions, rising sea levels and devastating flood, together with their growing economic and human costs.

"But everyone can 'do their bit' for the environment and fight climate change by making very small changes in their day-to-day office life."

Workers are being urged to turn off electrical items after use when they go home, boil only as much water they need when making a couple of cups of tea or coffee and use energy-efficient lighting in the office.

Environment Minister Michael Meacher said: "It's amazing how much energy we all waste at work. It is this sort of waste which we must tackle and, with the tiniest bit of effort, we can all 'do our bit' to help fight climate change."
