THERE was an end of an era at an Otley stationery company - as two workers retired after spending nearly a century between them at the firm.
Brian Varney, of Pool Road, Otley, joined William Sinclair & Sons Stationers as an apprentice cutter at the age of 15 in 1950 and worked his way up in his department to become supervisor of the Perfect Binding Department in 1976.
Peter Crossfield, of Wrenbeck Drive, Otley, started training at the company as an apprentice ruler in 1956, aged 16, and after mastering his trade progressed to supervisor of the Ruling Department in 1995.
Mr Varney, who is planning to take up golf and painting, was presented with an inscribed watch as part of his retirement gift from the company.
Mr Crossfield, who is hoping to use his retirement to learn more about the internet was given a contribution towards a computer.
Mr Varney, said: "I have seen lots of changes. The firm has grown twice fold. I am hoping to enjoy myself now."
Mr Crossfield said: "Everything is done a lot faster now. The firm has certainly kept up with modern times."
Andrew Howard, chairman of the North Street-based company, said: "They have been good, loyal employees for the company. It is still a family-run business and it means a lot."
