Seventy jobs are to go at a leading Keighley label manufacturer. HH Calmon yesterday confirmed a third of its workforce faces redundancy. Group chief executive Phil Gordon says: "We have had a response from people willing to take voluntary redundancy, but it still means there will be 45 compulsory job losses. We are still going through the legal procedures, and it will be into May before workers will be told who is going."
He says: "We are a big employer in Keighley, and this comes as a shock to people when we are so successful. But we have invested heavily in new equipment, which unfortunately means we do not need as many people. We aim to continue in Keighley for many years to come, so we have to ensure we can compete in the world market."
It is understood candidates for redundancy will be selected on a system weighted according to criteria like performance, disciplinary record, flexibility, attitude and length of service.
