Ilkley'S Reeta Bywater has died aged 103 after enjoying life to the full in three different centuries.

Mrs Bywater, of Cowpasture Road, has been described by her son, Ken, as 'Ilkley's oldest original.'

She died peacefully in Airedale Hospital after a short illness.

Ken Bywater said: "She was very affable and had a great sense of humour. She never stopped

laughing."

Born in 1897, Mrs Bywater spent all her life in Ilkley and her son fondly remembers listening to her many

stories.

"She knew Donkey Jackson (a famous Ilkley character) and was at the station to welcome the mayor of Mafeking back to Ilkley in 1901," he said.

Mrs Bywater enjoyed a job as a dress maker before meeting and

marrying her late husband John.

Her son joked: "She always said the recipe for a long and happy life was to keep laughing and avoid work at all costs."

"She loved a good gossip as well," he said.

Mr Bywater said his mother had enjoyed remarkable health throughout her life. "I really can't remember her ever being ill," he said.

Her maiden name was Hudson and Mr Bywater believes the 'oldest

original' tag is warranted as the family's connection with Ilkley stretches back to the mid 17th century.

As well as a son, Mrs Bywater had three grandchildren and a great grandchild.

The funeral service will be held tomorrow at Christchurch, The Grove.
