Cross Hills have suddenly found themselves in a three horse race for the Silentnight Premier Division title -- after dominating the division for much of the season.
They just managed to scrape a victory over relegation threatened Grassington who were full of running as they battled against the drop. Hills lacked ideas up front and their final ball was pathetic. The Dales side took the lead and held on until after the break, but the half-time team talk had an effect on Cross Hills who played a little better.
Early in the period Peacock's cross was firmly met by Robert Kaminski and the sides were level. Hills began to get on top and a solo run by James McCormack saw them take the lead. Grassington came back strongly, but the introduction of David French steadied the ship and Hills held on for the points. They must win their final match against challengers Oxenhope Recreation if they are to have any chance of taking the title.
Oxenhope put a huge dent in Embsay's title threat with a 5-2 victory. Pat Higgins opened their account and further goals from David Collier and Stephen Pearson gave the home side a 3-0 interval lead. Embsay could not cope with the pace of the Oxenhope side and although they slotted home two second-half penalties, goals from Stephen Pearson and Paul Sewell killed any chance of a fight back.
Keighley FC had to beat Skipton Bulldogs if they were to be anywhere near in the final shake-up, but went down to a 3-1 defeat. The Skipton side's opener came midway through the first half and Joynal Ali equalised.
The game hung in the balance until a disastrous own goal handed the advantage to Dogs and as Keighley came out to chase the game Dogs took advantage to put the game beyond doubt.
Cowling were looking to follow up their midweek victory when they visited Intake, attacking from the off on a pitch which resembled Blackpool beach. They could not get the ball in the net and it remained goalless until an Intake player slotted the ball past his own keeper in the second half. Stuart Sugden and Robert Walker followed up to secure a 3-0 victory.
Oxenhope Recreation Reserves were looking for points to avoid the drop and had Carleton struggling early in the game, but they continued to waste chances. Carleton were restricted to the occasional raid, but managed to score before half-time. The second period was much the same with Oxenhope creating chances and Carleton attacking on the break adding a second to seal the match. Time is running out for Oxenhope if they are to stay up.
Division Two leaders Bronte Wanderers moved nearer the title with an easy victory over Skipton Bulldogs Reserves who were two up within 10 minutes. An easing of the pace saw Bulldogs pull a goal back, but Bronte were in no mood to falter and added a third before half time.
The second half saw Bronte in total command, playing fluent football and they dominated to such a degree that it was a surprise that they could only score four more goals. Bulldogs never gave up and a second goal was some small consolation for the runaround they had been given. Neil Rollins scored five supported by Michael Thompson and Carl Hartas.
Cowling Reserves were looking for points to climb clear of the relegation zone when they entertained Barrowford United, they took the lead when David Gott's header was directed home by a Barrowford defender. The Lancashire club drew level on half time but Cowling regained the lead through Martin Gott. They looked to be heading for both points until a spectacular volley by Joe Rainsford flew into his own goal - it was one of the best he has scored, but cost his side a point!
Silsden Athletic had a makeshift side out against high-flying Keighley FC and it showed as they went 3-0 down in the opening stages. Keighley found it hard to play their attractive football but still managed to score at will. Silsden rallied before half time and Shaun Faviour pulled a goal back.
Silsden started the second half well by conceded a breakaway goal and heads went down allowing Keighley to romp to a 7-2 victory with Jamie Cunningham scoring Silsden's second. Keighley scorers were Anthony Cooper 94), Lee Isherwood (2) and Stewart Kinnear.
Silsden FC visited second placed Barnoldswick United with another weakened side and paid the penalty as they went down 4-1.
Lothersdale Athletic also struggled for players and went down to a 4-1 defeat at Embsay.
The final meeting of the season between the top two teams in Division Three saw Bronte Wanderers Reserves complete the double over leaders Ilkley Juniors, and close the gap at the top. Defences were in control for most of the game but an interception saw Ian Maude put Bronte ahead. A super second half volley put Ilkley level and a Darren Maddocks free kick found the head of David Bainbridge who collected both points for Bronte.
