Television archaeologist Carenza Lewis has opened an exhibition in Skipton celebrating Craven's Celtic heritage.

Miss Lewis, a star of Channel 4's popular Time Team series, toured the exhibition at the Craven Museum in High Street, Skipton.

She said: "Just like Time Team, it's about making archaeology popular and accessible to everyone."

Siobhan Kirrane, Craven District Council's district museum's officer, said: "We are very pleased that Carenza could come and open the exhibition.

"Archaeology can be fun and there will be lots of events and activities throughout the period of the exhibition."

It explores the landscape and homes of the Celtic people, as well as their fashions, politics and the impact of the Roman invasion.

Among the exhibits is the 2,000-year-old Flasby Sword, found at Flasby, near Skipton, in the last century. And on loan from Leeds Museum is a Celtic pipe, found near Malham. Visitors can hear a tape of it being played.

To complement the exhibition, a series of historical re-enactments of the Celtic period will take place at the museum, including tomorrow evening and Thursday, April 27.

The museum is open weekdays from 10am to 5pm (closed Tuesdays), Saturdays, 10am to 12noon and 1pm to 5pm. Sundays 2pm to 5pm.
